One of the active constituents of St. John's Wort is Hypericin. Hypericin helps to increase the rate at which the body can metabolize serotonin & melatonin. These important neurotransmitters help the body receive, store & used sunlight more efficiently. Hypericin is found particularly in the oil gland located along the perimeter of the flower petals & leaves of the plant. The oil produced by these glands is what gives medicine made form fresh plant St. John's wort its' beautiful scarlet red hue. Another powerful constituent of St. John's Wort is hyperforin. This slows the uptake of dopamine, serotonin & noradrenaline and allows our "feel good"     neurotransmitters more time to function in our brain and body. This along with it's affinity for the sun makes St. John's Wort an ideal remedy for mild depression, mood elevation and increased energy levels. Both hyperforin & hypericin have also been examined for their anticancer properties & ability to inhibit tumor cell growth.
